Lucas Polkinghorn’s bright Maumee career came to a fitting end on Saturday at the OHSAA Division I track and field championships — with a pair of podium finishes.

Polkinghorn improved on his junior year finishes at the state meet, placing third in the high jump and sixth in the long jump.

In the high jump, he was tied for first at 6-foot, 8-inches until the bar moved up to 6-9. Nathan Bright, a senior from North Ridgeville, won the state title at 6-9, and West Clermont junior David Lack was second.

Polkinghorn finished fifth in last year’s high jump at the state meet with a height of 6-6.

Polkinghorn came into the long jump as the No. 1 seed after jumping 24-feet in the regional meet. He took sixth with a distance of 22-8.25, a little more than one foot behind the state champ, Hoover’s Isaiah Baker (23-10). Polkinghorn finished 1 3/4 inches behind fourth-place Joel Stirn of Lima Shawnee and one inch behind fifth-place Dion Sams of Buckeye.

Polkinghorn placed sixth in the high jump at last year’s state meet with a jump of 22-0.

Year over year, both of Polkinghorn’s jumps in 2024 would have given him state titles in 2025.

Polkinghorn has signed to compete at Chicago State University, an NCAA Division I school.
