There are few guarantees in life, but one of them might be Maumee opening its volleyball season against Wauseon.

For the eighth straight year, the Panthers opened their schedule against the Indians. Not only that, but the last four matches have gone at least four sets, including Saturday’s 3-2 loss to visiting Wauseon.

“They’re a tough school, it’s a tough group of girls,” Maumee coach Lindsay Vannett said. “It’s a great match to test and see where we’re at and look at a couple of things we need to clean up.”

The Panthers fell 25-20, 14-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-8.

They bounced back with a 3-2 win over visiting Bowling Green on Wednesday, but a 3-1 loss at Southview on Thursday dropped their record to 1-2.

The trio of senior Sydney Genot and juniors Brooke Kwiatkowski and Julia Coutcher led the way for Maumee in the season opener.

Genot recorded 16 kills, 17 digs, two blocks and two service aces. Coutcher finished with 18 digs and three aces.

Kwiatkowski tallied 32 assists, 21 digs, three kills, two blocks and two aces.

Bryanna Lankey and Hayden Vascik have been working back into roles as middles for Maumee, and Vannett credited them for their effort. Both notched six kills, while Lankey added five blocks and Vascik contributed two.

Vannett rotated through two different lineups against Wauseon, noting that early in the season is about discovery.

“It’s trying to see where our strengths are and where we can minimize our weaknesses,” she said.

Stats for the matches against Bowling Green and Southview were unavailable at the time of posting.
